Following worldwide outrage, X limits Grok's image generation features solely to paid subscribers

The artificial intelligence venture backed by Elon Musk has implemented significant limitations on Grok’s image generation function, restricting its use exclusively to paid subscribers on the X platform. This move comes immediately after the tool faced intense global scrutiny and condemnation for its reported ability to facilitate the creation of sexualized and nude imagery depicting women and children. Grok confirmed this specific policy change on Friday, communicating in responses to user inquiries that the capability to both generate and edit visual content within the X environment would now be gated, requiring an active paid membership for access. Crucially, however, these heightened payment requirements and security measures were not applied universally across all platforms. At the time of this publication, the standalone Grok application maintained an open policy, allowing any user—regardless of whether they held an X subscription—to utilize its picture generation capabilities without having to pay.
