SoftBank finalizes $40 billion funding deal with OpenAI, per source

## SoftBank Finalizes Historic $40 Billion Investment in OpenAI, Cementing Commitment to AI Future Technology behemoth SoftBank Group has finalized its landmark investment commitment to OpenAI, completing a substantial capital infusion valued at $40 billion, according to an informed source on Tuesday. This transaction stands out as one of the most considerable private funding rounds ever recorded, significantly amplifying founder Masayoshi Son’s strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence development. The conclusion of this massive deal underscores SoftBank’s established role as a key orchestrator in global private technology financing. The Japanese conglomerate has aggressively channeled capital into foundational AI platforms and crucial underlying infrastructure, including the necessary expansion of large data center networks. This strategy aligns with the broader market shift, where artificial intelligence has become the primary gravitational center of worldwide technology investment throughout the past year. The initial terms of the agreement, first struck back in March, saw SoftBank commit a ceiling of $40 billion into a dedicated for-profit subsidiary affiliated with the creator of ChatGPT. While the initial valuation following the funding injection placed OpenAI’s worth at approximately $300 billion on a post-money basis, data from Pitchbook indicates a substantial increase; a subsequent secondary stock offering completed in October valued the firm closer to $500 billion. Regarding the structure of the financing, the source familiar with the negotiations disclosed that the full capital commitment was met through a combination of funding sources. This structure included a prior $8 billion direct investment by SoftBank, coupled with $10 billion syndicated from co-investors. This meant the Japanese investment giant transmitted the final tranche, ranging between $22 billion and $22.5 billion, to fulfill the total commitment amount. Beyond the immediate financial injection, OpenAI remains a pivotal figure driving industry-wide expenditure on future AI capabilities. This is evidenced by the "Stargate" initiative—a sweeping, multi-year endeavor planned in collaboration with entities like Oracle and other stakeholders. Designed to construct next-generation data centers capable of supporting the most advanced AI models, the ambitious project reportedly enjoys the financial support of key investors, including SoftBank. Neither SoftBank Group nor OpenAI immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the closing of the transaction. News of the deal was first reported by CNBC earlier in the day.
